What is a Vortex?

A vortex is a circulating current of air generated by moving aircraft. These generally are disturbed by moving air, however, in very rare occurrences can reach roof level and cause damage to property.

Who is responsible?

Liability for vortex damage lies with the airline in question, however, Glasgow Airport recognises it is not always possible to identify specific aircraft. As part of our continued commitment to our local communities, a vortex protection procedure is in place to ensure instances, where homes have been damaged, are investigated and the appropriate repairs are carried out.

My home has been damaged, what should I do?

If you suspect your home has been subject to damage by an aircraft vortex the incident should be reported immediately to vpp@glasgowairport.com providing the following details:

  • Name, address, contact telephone number
  • Date, time and details of the aircraft in question, if possible
  • Details of the extent of the damage
  • Photographs of the damage should be included, if safe to do so

A member of our property team will make contact as a priority by the next working day in order to appoint a specialist vortex assessor to inspect any damage. If confirmed that a vortex strike has occurred, Glasgow Airport will ensure free remedial repairs are undertaken to return the property to its previous state prior to the incident.

Please ensure temporary repairs are not carried out to your property prior to the inspection taking place. If temporary repairs are deemed absolutely necessary to ensure your property is made safe and wind and water tight, please contact your insurance provider in the first instance.
