Passengers can now help support Glasgow Airport’s FlightPath Fund by posting their spare foreign currency from the comfort of their own home thanks to a new pilot donation service.
Each year our generous passengers donate on average £10,000 to the FlightPath Fund by depositing leftover currency in one of six collection globes positioned around the terminal.
The money collected via the globes is added to a lump-sum donation from Glasgow Airport – £72,000 in 2022 – which ensures the FlightPath Fund continues to support a diverse range of local groups, charities and organisations across the Glasgow, Renfrewshire, East and West Dunbartonshire local authority areas.
Now passengers who have leftover currency at home and want to support the work of the Fund can order a pre-paid collection box to send in their spare currency.
Archie Hunter, Chair of Glasgow Airport’s FlightPath Fund, said: “The collection globes have been an excellent addition to the FlightPath Fund’s work, and it is heartening that passengers continue to generously donate their spare currency when travelling through Glasgow Airport.
“I know from my own experience travelling that you can often just be focussed on either getting to your destination or arriving home and may not see the globes when making your way through the airport. We wanted to trial a pre-paid option for passengers who may have foreign currency lying around they probably won’t ever use again and are keen to see it go to good use.
“I’ve seen first-hand the fantastic work taking place across hundreds of local educational, environmental and employment-based projects, charities and groups. This is all made possible through the FlightPath Fund and the support of Glasgow Airport’s fantastic passengers.”
The total amount collected came from dozens of different global currencies including Croatian Kunas, Turkish Lira, Polish Zloty, Singaporean Dollars, Latvian Lats, South African Rands, Ukrainian Hryvnia and Israeli New Shekel. Currencies new to the collection globes included Malawian Kwacha, Ethiopian Birr, Macau Patacas and Costa Rica Colons.
The top five currencies out with the UK Pound collected were:
- The Euro
- US Dollars
- Croatian Kuna
- Vietnamese Dong
- Swiss Franc
Out with the weird and wonderful currencies of the world, the globes also collected donations in pre-Euro currencies including Irish Punts, Austrian Schillings and German Deutsche Marks.
Passengers interested in donating spare foreign currency can simply visit the dedicated FlightPath Fund page on the Glasgow Airport’s website for further information, or email flightpath@glasgowairport.com to request a pre-paid currency collection package.
