Glasgow Airport’s FlightPath Fund has awarded £7,400 to Ocean Youth Trust Scotland to ensure local young people can take part in life-changing sailing adventures this summer.
The Fund has supported Ocean Youth Trust Scotland for several years and made the extra funding available to ensure two local youth groups from Renfrewshire and Clydebank will benefit from these youth work voyages at sea.
Over the course of five days, the young people aged between 12 and 17 will take part in the Trust’s CashBack for Communities programme, a Scottish Government initiative aimed at supporting those deemed most likely to become involved in the criminal justice system. They will embark on a series of five-day voyages that will see them live and work on board one of two 72-foot sailing boats.
Most of the young people taking part will have no experience of sailing, but will learn together and work as a team to crew the boat as it sails around some of Scotland’s most stunning scenery.
20 young people from the following groups will take part in the voyages of a lifetime:
- Y Sort It project in West Dunbartonshire, which supports young carers
- Kibble in Renfrewshire, which supports children at risk
Archie Hunter, chair of Glasgow Airport’s FlightPath Fund, said: “Ocean Youth Trust Scotland is a tremendous organisation and we are extremely proud to continue supporting the fantastic opportunities these educational and life-changing sailing adventures deliver to some of the most disadvantaged young people in our local communities.”
Ashley Mabon, Head of Fundraising at OYT Scotland, commented: “We are enormously grateful for the support from Glasgow Airport’s FlightPath Fund, which has once again allowed us to support these deserving young people as they embark on the adventure of a lifetime. Our voyages at sea equip young people not only with practical skills, but with life skills that will put them on a path to more positive destinations.”
More than £90,000 is being made available by the FlightPath in 2022 and the Fund’s Committee is continuing to urge neighbouring groups and organisations to submit applications.
The FlightPath Fund’s Committee is keen to hear from and support sustainability-themed projects aimed at improving the environment in the communities local to the airport.
The FlightPath Fund’s committee, which includes elected representatives from each of the four local authority areas, meets on regularly throughout the year to consider all applications made and to allocate any agreed financial support.
The next meeting is on April 1 and applications must be submitted no later than three weeks prior to the meeting. To find out more about applying for funding support, visit: FlightPath Fund | Glasgow Airport
