The largest of the Ionian islands, Kefalonia is also one of the most spectacular. Situated due west of Patras on the mainland, it won international attention with the publication of Louis de Bernières’s novel Captain Corelli's Mandolin and its subsequent film adaption. Travel to Kefalonia from Glasgow Airport and discover an enduring romantic allure, gorgeous sun kissed beaches and agreeably mild Mediterranean climate. Fly direct year round with Jet2.com.

Weigh anchor on Kefalonia

While away a sunny afternoon exploring a string of quaint seaside villages, such as the upmarket Fiskardo, built around a yacht-filled harbour and rimmed by pastel-coloured, Venetian-style buildings. Close by, the coastal village of Assos lures seafarers in with its bijou harbour and authentic tavernas. Take an idyllic drive across the island and marvel in a landscape offering rustic vineyards, olive groves and wild meadows teeming with poppy flowers, often to a soundtrack of gentle goat bells.

Beaches built for Hollywood

Kefalonia’s beaches are among the most beautiful in Greece, where thin strips of white sand are overlooked by forest-lined bays. Despite its film-star credentials, Myrtos Bay remains an unspoilt sunbathing spot on the west coast of the island. The wide bay, backed by steep, limestone cliffs, gives way to fine pebbles and bright turquoise water. Further south, Petani Beach occupies another bucolic cliff-side position, offering a sandy shoreline dotted with parasols, a beachside bar and restaurant.

The wild horses of Kefalonia

Kefalonia’s population of approximately 35,000 aren't the only natives on the island. The loggerhead turtle, Mediterranean monk seal and European pine marten all call the island home, and the pine-strewn forests of Mount Ainos National Park are rich in biodiversity - and are also the best place to spot the island's elusive wild horses. Mount Ainos' peak, Megas Soros, rises to 1628m elevation and offers unparalleled views over the island on a clear day.
